Lion’s Roar is seeking a thoughtful, skilled Copy & Story Editor, with a focus on advancing and integrating Asian American voices, to strengthen the clarity, impact, and cultural depth of our editorial work across platforms. We are a mission-driven Buddhist media organization committed to bringing wisdom, compassion, and thoughtful journalism into the world, and we are looking for someone who combines editorial craft, mission-alignment, and collaborative spirit to help us increase our impact.
This is a core editorial role that supports excellent storytelling and journalism, teachings and practice instruction, and community-building content across platforms. The position has a focus on advancing and integrating Asian American voices throughout Lion’s Roar’s offerings, including stewardship of Bodhi Leaves, our ongoing initiative to highlight Asian American Buddhist writers and teachers. This portfolio is a meaningful part of the role, but it does not limit its scope.
The Copy & Story Editor ensures that ideas land clearly, stories are well told, and language reflects editorial rigor, warmth, curiosity, and broad inclusivity. The role requires independent judgment, strong collaboration, and the ability to help shape work from early development through final publication in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
This full-time (35 hrs per week) position can be a hybrid or remote work arrangement. Lion’s Roar office is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This position reports to the Editor of Lion’s Roar magazine.
Priority will be given to candidates eligible to work in Canada. Exceptional U.S. based remote candidates may be considered, depending on experience and operational feasibility; however, we are not able to provide immigration sponsorship for this role.
Remote work is available for candidates based outside Halifax, Nova Scotia. Halifax-based employees are expected to maintain a hybrid work arrangement, determined in consultation with the employer.
What You’ll Do
● Edit articles, essays, interviews, newsletters, and teaching materials for clarity, structure, tone, and accessibility
● Collaborate with other editors to identify and support external contributors in order to amplify Asian American Buddhist perspectives across all our platforms
● Work with senior editors and writers to strengthen story structure, narrative flow, and clarity across Lion’s Roar content
● Steward Bodhi Leaves as a vibrant, mission-aligned portfolio within the broader editorial ecosystem
● Support and mentor emerging writers connected to the Bodhi Leaves portfolio, including through individual contributions and an annual fellowship program
● Produce occasional reported pieces, interviews, or editorials as needed
What We’re Looking For
Strong developmental editing, copyediting, and interviewing skills
Strong writing skills in both narrative and journalistic modes
Demonstrated familiarity with Buddhist teachings and communities; knowledge of Asian American Buddhist teachers and communities is a strong asset
Experience cultivating contributors or mentoring emerging writers
Ability to offer thoughtful editorial perspective while working constructively within a team
Openness to learning, receiving and offering feedback, and to evolving understanding
A demonstrated commitment to deepening the presence and integration of Asian American teachers, authors, and communities within Buddhist media
This is a hands-on editorial role for someone who cares deeply about language, craft, and community—and who is excited to help shape the future of Buddhist media. We recognize that no candidate will meet every qualification listed. If you believe you would be a strong fit for this role, we encourage you to apply.
Compensation
The salary range for this position will be commensurate with experience, plus benefits for Canadian employees. Compensation for U.S.-based hires will be structured in alignment with role scope and operational considerations.
