Checking into this quietly luxurious townhouse – among the Georgian terraces that once inspired the writers and artists of the Bloomsbury Group – feels more like being handed the keys to an old family residence than a hotel room

Location

A five-minute stroll from Russell Square, 15 minutes from both King's Cross and Euston, and neighbour to the British Museum, The Zetter Bloomsbury couldn't be better placed for a cultural weekend in the capital.

The hotel is in one of London's most storied neighbourhoods. Bloomsbury was once home to an influential circle of writers, artists and thinkers, including Virginia Woolf, EM Forster and John Maynard Keynes. It was a place where creativity, conversation and curiosity flourished – and that spirit still lingers in its leafy squares, independent bookshops and handsome Georgian terraces.

The vibe

The third opening from the boutique Zetter hotel group (the others are in Clerkenwell and Marylebone) feels entirely at home in this neighbourhood. Its greatest asset isn't its postcode but the feeling when you step through the front door. Outside is modern London; inside, time seems to soften. In antique-filled rooms, rich velvet furnishings and softly lit corners create the feeling of entering another era.

Artefacts thought to date back as far as the Egyptian, Greek and Roman periods mingle with more modern curiosities, including bowls reportedly recovered from the Titanic. The effect is less museum, more the home of a fascinating collector.

Service

The service at Zetter Bloomsbury is attentive, yet effortlessly makes you feel at home. As a solo traveller, I felt genuinely looked after as the team knew when to stop for a chat or simply check that I had everything I needed. One recommendation I was particularly grateful for was the perfectly mixed margarita – just the right companion for an evening in The Parlour bar and lounge.

Bed and bath

There are 68 rooms in total at Zetter Bloomsbury, spread across six floors, with five different categories, ranging from Cosy all the way up to eight suites, including the Terrace Suite (overlooking the hotel’s secluded garden). Even the entry-level rooms feel indulgent. Egyptian cotton linen, jewel-toned fabrics, antique furniture and carefully chosen curiosities mean no two rooms are the same.

Large Georgian sash windows flood the rooms with natural light during the day. As evening falls, carefully placed lighting creates an entirely different mood; intimate, cinematic and very grown-up.

Bathrooms feature generous rainfall showers stocked with Verden toiletries. Suites also come with freestanding baths in the bedrooms.

Food and drink

Breakfast is served in The Orangery, a bright conservatory overlooking the hotel's gardens. Filled with plants and artwork, it's a peaceful retreat. The a la carte offering spans everything from healthy bowls of chia muesli with Granny Smith apple, stem ginger and coconut, to a classic full English and Eggs Royale. All dietary requirements can be taken care of.

Afternoon tea is also served in The Orangery. Delicate finger sandwiches filled with Coronation chicken and truffle egg mayonnaise give way to warm scones with jam and clotted cream before a procession of beautifully crafted pastries is served, including a rich chocolate délice layered with salted caramel and cocoa nibs. Add a glass of champagne and the hours happily slip away.

There is no formal restaurant at the Zetter Bloomsbury, but The Parlour serves coffees, light bites, bar snacks, and cocktails and wine come evening, and is perhaps the hotel's loveliest room. By day, sunlight pours through windows onto bookshelves, antiques and comfortable armchairs. By evening, antique lamps cast a warm amber glow across the room.

If you prefer a sink-in velvet sofa, you can take your drinks to the The Drawing Room (ground floor) or The Living Room (lower ground floor); both are beautiful lounges that can be hired for private events for up to 30 guests.

Facilities

There's a small well-equipped gym open 24 hours a day overlooking the gardens, with a rowing machine, bike, running machine, free weights and a bench. Yoga mats are available for guests wanting a slower start to the morning, and the hotel has two electric bikes that are available to borrow free of charge.

Accessibility

The hotel has two accessible bedrooms with adapted wet rooms and lift access.

Pet policy

Dogs are welcome in all rooms, with chew toys, a selection of treats, food bowls and a comfy dog bed in situ on arrival. Rooms also come with a guide to the best dog-friendly places in the area. There is a fee of £25 per pet, per stay.

Check-in is 3pm, check-out is 11am.

Family-friendly?

There are several interconnecting rooms designed with families in mind; these are best suited to those with older children and teenagers. A free cot can be added to all rooms for under-twos.
