In Buddhist symbolism how can an angry face of terror and wrath actually represent the Face of Great Love? Why would an enlightened Buddha, dedicated to peace, manifest as an angry, fanged figure engulfed in flames, and wielding weapons? Is it possible that what looks like hatred is actually the sharpest instrument of compassion? In the next few minutes, we will peel back the apparently terrifying mask of Vajrakilaya to reveal the “Great Glorious Vajra Youth” and discover why his wrath is the ultimate expression of Bodhichitta, compassion and love.

To the untrained eye, Vajrakilaya, also known as Dorje Phurba and Vajrakumara, appears frightening. In fact, this deity is the “sharp weapon” used against our own worst enemies: the demons of craving, hostility, envy, greed, and ignorance.

He is not “angry” in the worldly sense. His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche teaches us that the deity’s heart essence is nothing other than love and affection in his book on Vajrakilaya. The very nature of his pledge to sentient beings is loving-kindness, which manifests through various skillful means.

Key Benefits Highlighted:
