As a regular at Sopwell House, Emilie Lavinia reveals how she makes the most of the offering at one of her favourite UK spa hotels

One of the best spas in the country, beloved by sporting royalty, Sopwell House in Hertfordshire is the jewel in the Home County’s crown

Location

From the moment you arrive at Sopwell House, set in rolling Hertfordshire countryside just outside St Albans, there’s a clear sense that this is a property with history and ambition, and all within easy reach of London.

The easiest way to get to the hotel is to drive. The journey from London takes a maximum of 45 minutes. However, a train from St Pancras provides an easy ride to the commuter town of St Albans. From there you can take a taxi or a bus to your destination. The whole journey is less than an hour.

It’s always been a favourite spa hotel for me as a Hertfordshire resident, because it boasts better facilities than many of London’s spa hotels and is surrounded by greenery and fresh air.

The vibe

The sweeping driveway, stately facade and manicured grounds set the scene for this grand country house escape which promises calm, comfort and a little bit of indulgence – exactly what you’d hope for from a spa hotel.

Sopwell House blends understated British country house charm with hints of modern design. Interiors lean on warm upholstery, and serene lounge spaces invite lingering over coffee, cocktails or afternoon tea. The ambience is relaxed rather than ostentatious, perfect for a restorative weekend or an adult escape.

Live music from the bar can drift into the corridors, which will delight some, and disturb others, depending on your definition of “peaceful”. Generally the vibe is quiet and relaxed.

Guests flock here for the Instagram shot in the outdoor pool (if you know, you know) and for top tier R&R.

But there are disadvantages to being a popular haunt for footballers and the well-heeled. Facilities get busy at peak times, and there’s an occasional mismatch between price and perceived value, so choose your spa package wisely.

Service

Front-of-house teams are warm, welcoming and attentive. Slightly less so in the spa but this may be due to the sheer volume of footfall. The spa is sprawling and welcomes thousands of visitors each week. The restaurant staff are incredibly helpful, and the bartenders in the hotel’s cosy separate cocktail bar really know their stuff.

Bed and bath

The hotel offers a range of accommodations from contemporary Chic Rooms to larger suites and separate Mews Suites located in private gardens. All come with Elemis toiletries, and many have beautiful views over the lawns or parkland. A Corner Suite is the kingpin and an excellent overnight experience.

The standard rooms are stylish and comfortable, though not quite as grand as the rest of the property might lead you to expect. Suites and Mews Suites, with their separate lounges, and private outdoor space, feel markedly more luxurious.

All rooms are decorated to a very high standard with modern marbled bathrooms and fluffy towels. Mews Suites have in-room bathtubs,

Food and drink

Omboo offers pan-Asian fare, small plates and a great wine list

Dining at Sopwell House is wonderfully varied. The Brasserie serves classic British fare throughout the day, from generous buffet and a la carte breakfasts to hearty evening mains, while Omboo’s Asian-inspired sharing plates add a more contemporary counterpoint to the menu. Try the waygu steak and miso-glazed black cod for a melt-in-the-mouth moment, or opt for the yellowtail salad for something fresher.

For drinkers there’s an extensive yet thoughtful wine list. Afternoon tea and the hotel’s bar offerings are well presented and executed.

Menus clearly list allergens, and the hotel can cater to dietary requirements with 48 hours notice from guests.

Facilities

The Cottonmill Spa is Sopwell’s trump card, and the reason most people make the trip here. Recently refurbished and expanded, the spa boasts an indoor pool, multiple steam and sauna rooms offering aromatherapy and views out into a beautiful garden. There are also vitality and hydrotherapy pools, outdoor hot tubs, relaxation areas and hydration stations.

Access to the more premium areas isn’t included with all room types, and securing space, particularly at peak times, can be tricky without booking ahead or choosing an upgraded package. Still, the standard spa includes a large lap pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

The gym is small but very well equipped with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment.

The treatment rooms are low-lit and soothing with plenty of spaces to relax afterwards and sip on cucumber-infused water while looking out at beautiful gardens. Choose from the likes of a restorative massage or rebalancing facial.

There are several accessible rooms. However, there are parts of the historic building that are not step-free, so it’s best to call ahead to ensure access to certain rooms and areas of the hotel, along with other specific needs like accessible en suites.
