Revealed: The most popular destinations for UK cruise passengers
Industry data suggests seven-night departures remain the most popular sailing duration
The number of British and Irish holidaymakers choosing a cruise rose last year, industry data has revealed.
Figures from trade body the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) show passengers from the UK and Ireland took 2.54 million ocean cruises last year, surpassing the previous highest total of 2.4 million in 2024.
This includes cruises departing from the UK as well as around the world in locations such as the United States, the Caribbean and Europe.
The Mediterranean remains the most popular destination for a cruise, chosen by 34.5 per cent of passengers.
This was followed by 27.2 per cent who sailed in Northern Europe and 13.7 per cent in the Caribbean.
A cruise may be associated with an older demographic but the data shows the typical guest age was 54.6, with a seven per cent increase in children under 12. This suggests more families are choosing cruises.
The average cruise length was 9.6 days, in line with 9.7 days in 2024, while seven-night departures remain the most popular sailing duration, accounting for 44 per cent of sailings.
The increase comes as new vessels are launched, including Star Princess last summer and Legend of the Seas which will hit the waves in July.

Explaining the appeal, Carnival UK and P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said that passengers are “choosing cruises for entertainment, food, and immersive opportunities ashore – not just the itinerary on paper.”
Antonio Paradiso, vice president of international sales for MSC Cruises, said the line is seeing a huge demand for no-fly cruises from the UK.
He said: “They are a great option for those looking for convenience, ease and great value for money.
“Simply drive or get the train to Southampton and your holiday starts straight away. You can bring as much luggage as you like – perfect for over packers, families, or anyone who wants to bring more than a tiny cabin bag with them.”
Andy Harmer, CLIA UK and Ireland managing director, added: “Cruise continues to appeal to a wide range of holidaymakers, with the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Caribbean all offering a great range of experiences and itineraries.
“They represent a shift towards deeper cultural engagement and more time spent in destinations, supporting local economies through onshore activities and extended stays.”
