Spanish airport to close for renovation with all flights diverted

A Spanish airport that welcomes thousands of British travellers every year is set to close for major upgrades.
Almeria Airport in Andalusia will shut for six days for work to take place on its runway, with all scheduled flights cancelled, rescheduled or diverted during this time.
The major work will take place over six days “in the second half of February 2028”, a statement from the airport reads – exact dates are yet to be confirmed.
Airlines that regularly fly in and out of the airport include Ryanair, easyJet and Iberia, all of which have been notified of the works by the Spanish airport operator Aena.
Direct routes flying to Almeria from the UK include London Gatwick Airport, London Southend, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool and Birmingham.
Domestic routes touching down at the Andalusian transport hub include flights from Barcelona, Seville and Madrid.
The renovation marks the first work on the runway in 20 years and forms part of a wider 19-month €29m (£24.8m) project to upgrade the entire airport, which is set to begin in 2027.
During this period, further disruption is expected, with work taking place at night between 10.45pm and 7.10am, which may impact flights.
The airport is about a 15-minute drive from Almeria city centre and close to the A7 ‘Motorway of the Mediterranean’, which connects Almeria to coastal Spanish cities including Alicante and Benidorm.
Alternative airports serving Almeria include Granada-Jaén, which is 76.9 miles away, and Malaga, located 113.7 miles away.
The news follows the announcement that Belgium’s Charleroi Airport will close for almost three months in 2028 for similar works to its runway and interior.
Flights will be affected between 15 August and 31 October during the busy school summer holiday period and October half-term break.
Ryanair and Wizz Air both fly to and from the Belgian hub to Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle.
